Dramaturgy of social life

Notes on my art

Otto Hainzl reflects on us as a society.

This theme is the common thread in his work. He always refers to our European cultural sphere. It doesn't matter to him where in Europe the subject originates, places are usually interchangeable for him, and he doesn't see social patterns as being tied to a specific location.

He observes us and does not exclude himself. His method of choice is searching and photographing our traces - and he shows them to us in his exhibitions, books and in his studio which generates reflections on our very society. In this way, he leaves the interpretation back to us as viewers. Through this reflection, he shows us as an audience unfamiliar aspects of ourselves, often astonishing ones. The scenes, mostly in color, are everyday occurrences, always multi-layered which go into unexpected depth.
