Hotels I Know

Socially Coded Rooms

“Otto Hainzl, who makes social realities visible with his photos, captivated us with his photographs of various hotel rooms. The form of purism on which they are based struck their viewers with incredible force.“

Petra Fosen-Schlichtinger, OÖ Kulturbericht, 2019/11

"Places of intimacy, anonymity on offer, door to door with the public. Under the seal of secrecy, they are visited for private use for a limited period of time, only to leave them again immediately after the things are accomplished" - as Wolfgang Maria Reiter said in his opening speech.

Otto Hainzl has been working on this project for more than twelve years.

Rooms that have been prepared in great anticipation for an unknown guest. Rooms only used temporarily, rooms that are shaped through and through by our cultural sensibilities. Otto Hainzl reads about us as a society in his hotel rooms and transports it to the exhibition space for gleaning. Hence the subtitle ›Socially Coded Rooms‹
