Appearance

Appearances 2009 – 2012

You’re wandering through the woods or maybe along the lakefront when a mobile photo studio suddenly pops up by the wayside. It just appears. I appear to them, you appear to me. I invite passers-by to have their portraits taken. They get a copy of the photo as thanks. I call such a photo session an Appearance.

The portraits of all photographed individuals are published; no selection is made. This gives rise to a cross-section of people at the site, of this microcosm.

The work can be read along two axes. First of all, you perceive the presence of different people at the same site. And second, you perceive the different sites – along with their Appearances.
